Adjusting White Balance on the Apple iSight
by Ken Aspeslagh
About White Balance
Have you've ever noticed the image from your iSight looking a little blue or maybe slightly yellowish? This color tint on the image results from the type of lighting source that you're using. Even though the light bulb in your lamp looks perfectly white, it's actually casting a yellowish light. Light from outdoors will often make you look blueish. Correcting for the color cast is known in the camera industry as adjusting the white balance.
Get Balanced
To adjust the white balance of your webcam, open the iGlasses window and click the "More Adjustments" button to reveal the advanced settings. Then, select "White Balance" from the smaller pulldown menu. You can now move the slider left or right to correct the color. Move the slider to the right to correct for a blueish picture; move to the left to correct a yellowish picture.
Create a Custom Preset
During the day I rely on sunlight from the windows to illuminate the office, but at night I often work in the dark, my face lit only by the ghostly blue glow from the 17" iMac's screen. I've created iGlasses presets to match these two lighting conditions. (See the screenshot below.) To create a preset, adjust your settings and then click "Save Custom Preset". A new entry will be added to the main iGlasses menu.
