"Your camera is in use by another application"

If you recently started seeing "Your camera is in use by another application", this would have started when you upgraded to OS X 10.4.9. You'll need to upgrade iUSBCam to v2.2.4. If you're a registered user, click here to download the full version.
There are many other reasons why you might see this message, the most common being your camera is in use by another application.

Intel Mac Information

iUSBCam v2.2.4 is a Univeral Binary, allowing you to use USB cameras on the new Intel Macs. However, some existing camera drivers are not yet Universal. To use iUSBCam with these drivers, it's necessary to run iChat using Rosetta. iUSBCam will automatically detect non-native (PPC) drivers, and switch iChat to run with Rosetta. Note that Leopard's iChat 4 currently does not support Rosetta. This means that cameras using a non-Universal camera driver will no longer work with iChat in Leopard.

Important Information About Drivers

Slow frame rate with Communicate STX and macam:
If you experience a very low frame rate with a QuickCam Communicate STX, follow these instructions:
- Quit iChat.
- Open the macam application and connect your camera. (Don't click the start button.)
- Open the settings drawer by clicking the right-most button on the macam toolbar.
- From the Format menu, select SIF (320x240)
- Select "Save current Setting" from the Control menu on the menu bar.
- Quit the macam app and open iChat.
iChat Crashing on Launch: Macam 0.8.7 can cause an intermittent
crash when launching iChat with certain cameras. This problem is fixed
in the latest version of macam. Download the new version and
be sure to copy the macam.component file into your QuickTime folder
(replacing the old one). The new component will show version number 0.9.2. Affected cameras include the Labtec
Webcam Pro, Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX, QuickCam Messenger, and the Logitech QuickCam for NoteBooks Deluxe.
Black and White Stripes on Logitech Camera Image: This is a problem with corrupt preferences and can be fixed as follows: First quit iChat. Then, search your disk for "com.ecamm.iUSBCam.plist" and delete that file. Then, search for "com.logitech.webcam" (there may be more than one) and delete that file as well.
Logitech QuickCapture: Users have reported that running the QuickCapture program prevents iUSBCam from working until after a restart.
You should avoid running QuickCapture until Logitech fixes this.
Macam: When using the Macam drivers, never unplug your USB camera while iChat is open. This can cause a kernel panic (full system crash) requiring a restart.
Macam:
When using the Macam drivers, make sure you are not running the macam application when opening iChat. You must quit any video programs, including the macam program, before opening another program.
Macam and IOXperts: Do not launch iChat with both IOXperts and macam drivers installed at the same time. This includes the IOXperts still camera drivers. This will cause iChat to crash when running iUSBCam. To resolve this issue, uninstall either macam or IOXperts.
Macam installed twice: Some users have reported a crash when opening iChat caused by having the macam.component file installed in both their global domain (/Library/QuickTime) and their user domain (/Users/youruser/Library/QuickTime) at the same time. Please make sure you do not do this.
Dual Mode Cameras:
If your camera is dual mode (takes still pictures and live video), and you have installed an ImageCapture driver such as the IOXperts Still Image software, you may need to remove that software before iChat will let you use the camera for video conferencing.
See IOXperts's FAQ for information on uninstalling their still image driver.
Uninstalling Drivers:
Macam: To uninstall macam, simply remove the file macam.component from /Library/QuickTime.
IOXperts: See IOXperts's FAQ for information on uninstalling their driver.

Tiger Troubleshooting Tips

Install Your Camera Drivers: Don't forget to install any webcam drivers that you may need after you install Tiger.
Poor Performance With Latest Logitech Drivers: Be sure you are running the most recent iUSBCam version (v2.2.4).
Video Quality in Tiger Worse Than Panther: Many iChat 3
users have noticed that picture quality is much lower than in iChat 2 in
Panther. This is not a problem with iUSBCam but instead a problem
with iChat 3 itself. Click here
for details.
Make Sure Virex Not Installed: Virex is not compatible with Tiger,
and causes major problems with video chatting. Click here
for more info. |
Other Known Issues

Camera stops working: If you're using the macam driver, and the camera still works in the macam application but stopped working in other programs, you might need to trash the macam preferences file. To do this, look in your home folder, then Library/Preferences. Find the file called net.sourceforge.webcam-osx.common.plist and drag it to the trash.
Built-in iSight Settings: If you adjust camera settings of a built-in iSight, these settings may remain even after rebooting the computer. If you need to reset the camera to factory settings, follow these steps: Shut down your computer, and then disconnect the power cord for 10 seconds. Reconnect the power, and then start up the computer. Factory settings will be restored.
USB Audio on Intel Macs:
When some USB webcams are attached, iChat gives the option to use the webcam's microphone as the audio input for conferences. (You can choose which microphone to use in the Video section of iChat Preferences.) Webcam microphones are not available when running under Rosetta on Intel Macs.
Desktop Picture instead of Video: If you see a picture of your desktop instead of video from your camera, choose "Change Video Source" from the "Video" menu and change the video source to be your camera. You must plug in your camera before launching iChat in order to have it automatically chosen. This goes for the iSight as well. This was only a problem in v2.0. Make sure you're running the latest version of iUSBCam (v2.2.4).
iChat Setup: The first time iChat is run after being installed (iChat Setup), it will not recognize your camera even if you have previously installed iUSBCam. To resolve this issue, simply quit iChat after finishing the Setup steps, and then re-open it.
Mirrored Image: iChat shows you a mirrored (flipped
horizontally) image in the preview window. According to Apple, this is
not a problem, but is as it was designed. See Knowledge
Base Article #93252 for the official word on this.
Changing Your Audio Source:
If you change your audio source in the iChat Video Preferences, you may not hear any audio on the new source until you quit iChat and come back in.
USB Speakers:
There is a known problem with using a webcam and another bandwidth intensive USB device such as USB speakers. Users may experience a loss of sound in the speakers or a loss of video when using the two devices at the same time. IOXperts suggests running the speakers and the camera on different USB busses to avoid this problem.
Running Other Webcam Applications: Do not run any other applications that use your camera when using iChat.
Video Settings: Video settings are camera specific. Some cameras don't support all video setting types. If a camera doesn't support, for example, setting of contrast, then the contrast will not appear in the feature menu. DV camcorders typically do not support adjustment of video settings via software, but you may be able to set your brightness and contrast by using settings on the camera itself.
DV Camcorder Powers Off After A Few Minutes: All cameras are different, but most have a trick to keep them from going into standby. Some turn off only when they have a tape in them. Some will not turn off if you leave the tape door open. Experiment with your cam to find a way to keep it from powering off.
