Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does PhoneView work okay with the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.1 software update?
A: Yes.
Q: How can I download an upgrade or recover my registration instructions?
A: Registrations are managed by email address. If you know the email address you used when purchasing, use the recover registration information page to recover registration information.
Q: What happened to iPhoneDrive and MegaPhone?
A: It is now called PhoneView. Previous iPhoneDrive and MegaPhone customers are now PhoneView customers and should upgrade to PhoneView.
Q: Can I access my synced iTunes music and iPhone camera photos with PhoneView?
A: Yes, PhoneView can access this data in read-only fashion. This data must be managed via iTunes.
Q: Once I copy files to the iPhone, can I view/access the files through the phone?
A: No, PhoneView is only for file storage. There's no way to access your data via the iPhone's interface.
Q: Can I use this with Macs other than the Mac with which the iPhone is set to synchronize?
A: Yes, PhoneView will recognize your iPhone on any Mac that has PhoneView installed and meets the system requirements.
Q: Can I really use PhoneView to copy notes into the iPhone's Notes application?
A: Yes. See the instructions for details.
Q: When does the iPhone have to reboot, and is this really necessary?
A: The iPhone will reboot after adding, removing or editing notes. It will also reboot after removing SMS messages and Call History items.
In order to make changes, PhoneView utilizes the iPhone's backup/restore mechanism. After updating the device, it must reboot in order to see the new information.
Q: What kinds of files can be converted into Notes?
A: You can convert text files, rich text files, PDF files, Word files, and HTML files into notes on your iPhone by dragging them into the notes list. See the instructions for details.
Q: How can I change the font and color when editing notes?
A: When editing a note, you can access the Font and Colors palettes in the PhoneView Edit menu.
Q: How come images from my PDF or HTML files aren't showing up in the iPhone notepad?
A: PhoneView doesn't actually send images to the iPhone notepad, so images contained within a PDF won't be transferred. PhoneView extracts only the text and styles.
With an HTML file, the image tags must contain absolute links to online images, which will then load from the internet when viewed on the iPhone.
Q: Does PhoneView change system files or do anything that would void the iPhone's warranty?
A: No, PhoneView will store your files in the media section of the iPhone's disk, and will not change the iPhone system.
Q: How come the iPhoto photos on the iPhone are so small?
A: Unfortunately, the photos synced to the iPhone have been resized to 640x480 or smaller for viewing on the iPhone.
Q: Does PhoneView work okay with the Leopard?
A: Yes, it works fine.
Q: Does the iPhone have disk mode?
A: No. That is why we created PhoneView.
Q: Can I install PhoneView on multiple Macs or do I need multiple licenses?
A: You can install PhoneView on all of your Macs without the need to purchase multiple licenses.
Q: Is there a Windows version of PhoneView?
A: At this time, PhoneView is Mac-only. We recommend TouchCopy for Windows users.
Q: How do I uninstall PhoneView?
A: To uninstall PhoneView, simply drag the PhoneView icon to the Trash icon on your dock.
Q: Does PhoneView support resource forks?
A: No, PhoneView currently will not copy the resource fork of files to the phone. This will corrupt certain files such as custom icons and webloc files. To work around this, you can make a ZIP of the file before copying it to the phone.
