Top 10 Podcasting Tips from The Podcaster Hour

Are you a podcaster? Maybe still thinking about starting?

Podcasting has quickly become one of the most popular types of content out there. Not only is it easy to get started, but podcaster listeners have a high level of loyalty and engagement, so it’s a great way to build an audience and grow your business or brand.

We recently partnered with Ian Anderson Gray of The Confident Live Marketing podcast on a mini-series called The Podcaster Hour. On the show, Ian took viewers step by step through the process of planning, starting, running, promoting, and repurposing a podcast – and all using Ecamm Live as one of the main tools to accomplish it all. You can watch all of The Podcaster Hour episodes right here.

We asked Ian to share his top 10 takeaways from the Podcaster Hour so you can grab the key points you need to know before you dive into the world of podcasting.

Ian’s Top 10 Podcasting Tips

#1 – Plan your live show and/or podcast.

Planning is everything and helps you be consistent and keep on track. Don’t skip this step!

#2 – Don’t overthink the tech.

Get a simple dynamic microphone like the Samson Q2U. A Rodecaster Pro is nice, but it’s totally optional.

#3 – Know your audiences.

Think of your 3 audiences when you launch a podcast from your live show – Live, Replay, and Podcast listeners. Each is slightly different and will help you think through the best workflow.

#4 Create a Run of Show.

Having a run of show and structure for your live show makes it easy to repurpose the main section into a stand alone podcast episode.

#5 – Check Isolated Audio Tracks in Ecamm Live.

By checking off the isolated audio tracks feature in Ecamm Live’s Preferences, you can record you, your guest, and audio from videos and sound effects in separate audio files that you can use to create an amazing podcast. And the files are just there when you’re done live streaming or recording. No need to download anything.

#6 – Audio branding matters.

Record a voiceover and use music for an intro and outro and some transitions for your podcasts. This is optional, but highly recommended. It makes a difference and helps with branding.

#7 – Edit your podcast and save as an MP3.

Use a tool like Descript, Audacity, Adobe Audition, or Alitu. Or hire a podcast editor.

#8 – Don’t start without 5 episodes and a trailer.

Create your podcast on a podcast host and add at least 5 episodes and a trailer to get started. Captivate FM is my top recommended podcast host.

#9 – Branding!

Get podcast artwork designed and a stand out name for your show. Really good artwork can really help your podcast get noticed.

#10 – Publish it out across multiple directories.

Publish your podcast to the major directories including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more. And submit to Podchaser – the IMDB of podcasts.
